    Searching for Characters

With the new database, I want to get the "universe" data out of the character's name and into the Universe field where it belongs.

This means, though, that we'll have seemingly duplicated characters. Spider-Man, for example, exists in mainstream, ultimate, 2099 and a few other realities.

So ... do I include the universe when searching for text, so that searching for "2099" will pull back every character from the 2099 universe? Or are you happy to simply search for "spider-man" as long as you can see the Universe as a column in the search results?

I like option 2. Option 1 would mean I would have to type "ultimate" every time I want to search for an ultimate character, yeah? What about a pulldown box next to the search field with universe options (or check boxes)? You could have "616" or "regular" come up as default everytime and switch universes on the fly.

I did consider adding a second "universe" search box to the form, but all my "search online" forms are based off the same layout, so it wouldn't be practical to modify just one of 'em. I was hoping no-one would come up with that idea but you guys are too smart for me! Wink

    Give me a universe column.

THe question now is will the db beable to distinguish between characters of the same name between diffent universes? (Thor, Morgan Le Faye, etc)

Distinguish how? The db doesn't need to - it's the users who need to ... and now that we have a column in the search box, you can! Big Smile

D'oh - I just worked out what you meant, John. The "add cast member" dialog only shows the character's name ... and if two characters from different universes share a name, you can't know which is which.

I'll correct that now by showing the character in the dropdown control with a format like "Name (Universe)" or something if I can.
